About the hunt

About the hunt....

Here is how the hunt works if you are staying at the cabin....

In the afternoon, around 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., we leave camp in our vehicles (trucks preferred), and go to our chosen hunting area or stand.

Usually everyone is in their hunting stand by 6:00 p.m.  The stands are about 2 to 4 miles apart so it does take time to get everyone in your hunting group situated.

You will sit quietly until 30 minutes after sundown (legal hunting time).  In that area of Quebec, at that time of year, it is somewhere between 8:40 p.m. and 9:10 p.m. depending on what your hunting dates are.

This hunt is similar to stand hunting for deer.  Hunters can sit on these stands in the morning, but the experience has been that they are more active in the evenings.

What to expect....

Weather conditions can be from 40's to 70's degrees farenheit.  Could be rainy or dry.

Bugs or insects.  Lot's of them.  Biting Fly's, mosquito's.  You will need protection.

There is no cell phone reception in the hunting areas.

Return to camp after the evening hunt is late.

You are alone, it is quiet, and very serene and peaceful.  You may hear and see other wildlife.

Bears typically make very little noise, if any, when approaching the bait.

The hunting areas have relatively light human activity.  The bear have extremely sensitive noses and they know when you have arrived in their area.  It may take time for the bear to be comfortable with a new scent in his area.

Because of this, bears are rarely killed on the first evening.

In a group of hunter's, it usually gets real exciting on about the third day with either kills or bear sightings.
